Scottish Parliamentary Motion Supports Comic Same-Sex Wedding

From PinkNews:

Ten members of the Scottish parliament have backed a motion in support of the two gay X-Men characters due to wed in their comic’s next issue.

 [...]

The move impressed Labour MSP Mary Fee to table a motion to say that such weddings should not remain in the realm of fantasy.

The motion states: “That the Parliament welcomes the news that the Marvel comic, X-Men, will feature its first same-sex marriage, which will feature Northstar, believed to be the first openly gay comic superhero; understands that, in 1992, Marvel was the first comic publisher to reveal a gay superhero; notes that Northstar is not the first gay character to have had a same-sex marriage in the comic book world, and agrees that same-sex marriage should not be restricted to the world of literature and fantasy.”

[...]

Although the motion has no legislative force, the Scottish government concluded its public consultation on marriage equality in December 2011 and its conclusions are due to be published next month.

Ms Fee’s motion was supported by Kezia Dugdale, John Finnie, Patrick Harvie, Claudia Beamish, Bob Doris, Jim Eadie, Marco Biagi, Elaine Murray and Joan McAlpine.

NHS Scotland Removes Word “Dad” From Pregnancy Guide

 From The Daily Mail:

The Health Service has removed the word ‘dad’ from a pregnancy handbook for fear of offending gay and lesbian parents. Officials decided to use the term ‘partner’ throughout the 200-page guide, titled Ready Steady Baby, after receiving a complaint that ‘dad’ was discriminating against same-sex couples.

But the omission of the word has angered some campaigners who claim that traditional family values are being undermined.

The NHS feared that the term ‘dad’ may offend same sex couples and therefore replaced it with ‘partner’. Norman Wells, of the Family Education Trust, said: “This is all part of an agenda to present as natural a type of family that cannot be created by natural means. The NHS should not be squandering taxpayers’ money to advance the cause of a minority interest group”.

I actually know this book very well since my wife and I were given it when she became pregnant about three years ago. It’s quite helpful – although it did give me the false impression that midwives would welcome fathers having skin-to-skin contact with their child after the birth. The midwife who was present at our child’s birth looked at me as if I had proposed large-scale genocide when we expressed the wish that I might have skin-to-skin.

I must say that I am not terribly surprised at the excision of the word “dad” from the guide since it seems that the NHS treats the involvment of a father as an accidental rather than a substantial feature of pregnancy.

Pope Snubs Scottish First Minister

From The Christian Institute:

Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond, has been banned from meeting the Pope because of proposals to redefine marriage.

Mr Salmond had hoped to put himself on the world stage by meeting the Pope at the Vatican ahead of a Scottish referendum on independence.

But Roman Catholic leaders blocked the move because the meeting would have sent out the “wrong message”, given Mr Salmond’s position on gay marriage. The snub was reported today, the same day that Alex Salmond launches his “Yes Scotland” campaign for Scottish independence.

Alex Salmond’s Scottish National Party has worked hard to attract support from Scotland’s 800,000 Roman Catholics.

But he has been embroiled in a row with the Church over his gay marriage plans. A poll commissioned by Scotland For Marriage – a group that backs traditional marriage – shows that 11 per cent of voters are less likely to back independence if the Scottish Government redefines marriage.

[...]

Over 60,000 responses [to the Scottish consultation on same-sex marriage] were submitted, making it the largest response in Scottish Government history – dwarfing the response to the consultation on an independence referendum.

The analysis report is expected to be published very soon, the Scottish Government has remained tight lipped about whether it will progress with its gay marriage plans.

Cardinal Billot on Liberalism and the State

Cardinal Billot SJ

Nothing can remain except the gigantic and colossal State, an omnivorous thing, which, having destroyed all inferior organisation and autonomy, will absorb into itself all force, all power, all right, all authority, and become the sole administrator, procurator, instructor, preceptor, educator, and guardian, until it becomes the sole proprietor, owner and possessor. And what else, I ask, does this entail except a monstrous form of slavery? – From Liberalism: A criticism of its Basic Principle and Diverse Forms

It’s baffling – is it not? –  this worldwide campaign to redefine marriage to include unnatural unions. Why is so much public money being spent in the attainment of something for which there is so little public support? Why are the organs of education and the media so frenziedly trying to make us believe that homosexual unions are normal and healthy?

It is clear that there are powerful people – most of whom are probably not homosexual – who are committed to the Utopian project of a ‘world community’. It is these people who make up the top-tier of most Western governments and regard the populations of their respective nations as little more than clay to be moulded according to their (i.e. the elites) heart’s desire.

For such a top-down ‘world community’ to be erected it must be built using the bricks of atomised individuals – men, women, and children who have been liberated from the ‘bonds’ of traditional morality and the traditional (i.e. the natural) family. The State of the liberal elite is a jealous god and will have no rivals in the affections of its denizens. The natural family must become a thing of the past if the Leviathan State is to at last “reign all in all”.

It is clear that those who are pulling the levers of government, education, and the media see in the cause of “equal marriage” (sic) a convenient way to bring about the demise of the natural family through its redefinition. And what more effective way to recreate society than to do it in the name of “equality” and “justice”? Who would ever wish to be against either of those?

Just as an economy can be destroyed by flooding it with counterfeit bank notes, thus effectively debasing the value of genuine bank notes, what remains of a societal order based on the family can be destroyed by flooding it with counterfeit ‘marriages’. The result will be the destruction of the natural family and, thus, nations of rootless, atomised, malleable individuals…bricks wherewith to build a ‘world community’. Or to put it more bluntly, as Cardinal Billot does, we shall arrive at a “monstrous form of slavery” – one that is both mental and material – on a world-wide scale.

We should fight to defend marriage against those who would destroy it by redefining it under law to be something that it is not, but we should also keep in mind that the current attack against marriage and the family is part of a much larger and long-term war against the natural order of the world which the Catholic Church alone defends.

My Response to the UK Government Consultation on Same-Sex ‘Marriage’

I would recommend that everyone take a few minutes to respond to the UK Government consultation on same-sex ‘marriage’.

Here is my own response:

I believe that the UK Government, by stating its commitment to change the legal definition in advance of the results of the consultation, has acted in a profoundly anti-democratic way. In light of the fact that over 70 percent of the British public is against changing the legal definition of marriage, the stated intention by the Government, which preempted the consultation, displays a flagrant disregard of public feeling.

Marriage is an institution that was not created by the State but rather, as Aristotle points out in The Politics, is the institution on which the State is founded. Therefore, to tamper with the definition of marriage in response to the demands of a small minority is to make an experiment in social engineering that is against the common good and will further exacerbate the increasing social chaos that has been caused by the breakdown of the family.

The experience of other countries demonstrates that moves towards the redefinition of marriage under law inevitably leads to legal strictures being placed on those who believe marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman. The political implementation of Utopian ideals inevitably leads to the persecution of those who do not share those ideals.

Respond to the UK Consultation on Marriage

From the Scotland for Marriage campaign:

The UK Government has admitted that its own proposals to redefine marriage at Westminster will profoundly affect Scotland, quite apart from Alex Salmond’s plans.

David Cameron’s Government has said, for example, that it wants to strip the words “husband” and “wife” from tax and immigration forms and computer systems. London is deciding this for the whole UK. State-enforced culture change could be pushed on Scotland from Westminster.

The consultation at Westminster ends on Thursday 14 June. Please respond to the consultation today saying that you oppose the redefinition of marriage.

You can use:

The simple online form on the Coalition for Marriage website.

Or download this A4 response sheet.

Scotland for Marriage is continuing to campaign for keeping marriage as the union of one man and one woman. We are pursuing strategic initiatives throughout Scotland as we wait for the Scottish Government’s decision in response to its consultation.

Although the UK Government will not change the actual definition of marriage in Scots law (that is for Holyrood), redefining marriage at Westminster will inevitably have a bad impact on the whole of the UK. Scottish MPs will be able to vote on this.

It is vital that as many people as possible throughout the UK respond to the consultation at Westminster.
